Field Trip Delivers Learning

Our middle school students had a field trip "delivered" to them, thanks to All About Learning's  LEGO®  program. On January 31, an All About Learning instructor visited our school with bins of LEGOs and loads of instruction that required students to "experience" the realities of math and science concepts while having fun. This in-house field trip gave our middle school students hands-on practice putting math and science to work for them. Students built a motorized race car from scratch using advanced LEGO parts and pieces from LEGO kits, not available in stores. Students worked in groups of two per team and followed detailed instructions designed by a LEGO engineer. Each team worked together to build a race car and install an electric motor to race the car. This project harnesses the motivational effects of LEGOs to teach math and science (simple machines, forces in motion, gear ratios), learning mechanical vocabulary, three dimensional shapes, comparing and contrasting objects, extending patterns, and listening and following directions. The middle school students loved building, racing and learning about the cars! It was a great day of fun, (play) and learning! Check out photos here .
