Free Kindergarten Readiness Workshops are being offered to area parents on Thursday, February 11 and Tuesday, February 23 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The workshops are free of charge, and child care will be provided. Heritage is located at 2107 Sixth Street SW in Canton.
The workshops are designed to give parents of preschoolers practical tips for preparing their child for kindergarten and/or help parents who are not sure their child is ready. It also will help each parent understand what to expect in kindergarten readiness tests and in the classroom, and what is developmentally-appropriate for most children of kindergarten age.
The workshops will be taught by long-time kindergarten teachers Darla (Diehl) Richard and Ellie Burfield.
“When children come to kindergarten prepared, it gives them a great boost of confidence and their learning process moves much more easily,” said Richard. “We plan to give parents tools to help their child succeed in their first year of school, no matter where they attend school.”
Richard has been teaching young children for 30 years, with 26 years dedicated to teaching kindergarteners. She also taught preschoolers for three years and first grade for one year. She received her B.S. in Elementary Education from Malone University.
Burfield has been teaching young children for 27 years, with 20 years teaching kindergarteners and seven years teaching second graders. She has her Master’s in Elementary Education, and was administrator for Stark County Christian Academy for seven years. She said the workshop will help parents help their children.
“Parents will learn tips to help their child with writing, reading and math, along with tips on improving behavior skills and body control – all of which aid the learning process for a child,” said Burfield.
